Good 'cool' alternatives to Amsterdam with teens (near Amsterdam)

Hi, I'm taking my 17 and 15 year olds for a week in The Netherlands in July. They are both autistic, and my youngest, especially, will find Amsterdam too overwhelming to spend the whole week there, plus I'm on a budget, so it makes sense for us to base ourselves outside Amsterdam and visit for a couple of daytrips, as well as days at the beach. We will need self catering rather than a hotel, and won't be hiring a car. We're getting the Eurostar from London and it's going to be really hard work for my youngest, so somewhere easy to get to from Amsterdam Centraal would be great.

My kids are both into quite alternative stuff - my youngest is really into art and music (as am I), my oldest is a huge film buff, both are LGBTQ. We want to stay somewhere relaxed near water, with outside space, with lots of opportunities for urban wandering and cool things to see, with easy access on public transport to the beach for me, but on a smaller scale than Amsterdam. I've found an air b n b apartment in Alkmaar we really like the look of, but I'm worried it may be a bit staid for them.

Anyone have any idea whether Alkmaar would be a good base for us, or where would be a good alternative? (Haarlem? Leiden? Rotterdam? Utrecht?)

From a "quieter" perspective, all of those alternatives (with the exception of Alkmaar where I have no insight) and also the Hague would be good alternatives. And pretty easy to do day trips into Amsterdam. I would lean most towards Leiden, but honestly, all seem to have a good mix of "calm" and "action". Haarlem - to me - seemed the quietest of the group, so that may be good/bad for you. We also really liked Delft for its location and still lively core. Haarlem, the Hague, & Leiden all have easy access to the beaches, too. If you and your kids want a nice day that includes the beach and riding, you could rent bikes and easily ride to the beach from any of those cities. Rotterdam really has a cooler "modern" vibe with interesting architecture less like the traditional Dutch buildings you'll see elsewhere. We liked it.

All options would be considered "easy" connections to Amsterdam Centraal.

I would probably go for Leiden, the city center has a small town feel with decent restaurants, a nice shopping area, plenty of apartment type lets on Booking.com, well located for anyplace from Rotterdam to Amsterdam for day trips

Take them to the Escher Museum in The Hague. Very interesting and cool art! It’s easy to take the train from wherever you end up staying to The Hague and then walk to the museum.
