Getting to and from Muiderslot Castle

Hello travelers,

My wife and I will be in Amsterdam in late Sep. We’re interested in a day trip to Muiderslot Castle. Surprisingly, this day trip (or partial day trip) is not included in the RS book. We’ll be staying in the Jordaan district, and I’m looking for advice on the easiest way to get to and from the Castle.

We considered the boat option, which I believe is relatively new. But that seems tricky. Must buy tickets online? Few departures, in fact maybe only one? No info on return trip. We love being on boats in Europe, but this would be a short ride and maybe not worth the bother.

Setting aside the boat option, and a car rental option (which we do not want), what is the easiest way to go from the Jordaan district to the castle? Train from Centraal station to Weesp, then bus to Muiden? That would mean three modes of transportation (starting with a tram to Centraal) Is there an easier way to do this? Does bus 110 from Weesp to Muiden run frequently? I should note that we’re tentatively planning to do this on a Sunday, which may mean less frequent trains/buses.

Thanks for any suggestions.

The public transport planner www.9292.nl also gives the combination of train to Weesp and bus to Muiden, taking half an hour from Amsterdam Centraal. On Sundays the bus runs hourly with an efficient connection in Weesp: the bus platform is right in front of the railway station.
Weesp, by the way, is a pleasant small former garrison town, situated on the river Vecht, and you could do worse than having a look around before or after visiting the Muiderslot.
If you have interest in the Jewish history of Amsterdam, nearby Muiderberg has the most impressive »German« (Ashkenazi) cemetery, dating back to 1640. The bus from Muiden back to Weesp calls at Muiderberg (bus stop Gerard Doulaan).

Very useful, thank you! It seems fairly easy to do, even though three modes of transportation required (tram, train, bus). Train tickets easy to buy from machines at Centraal?

The machines shouldn't be a problem: they accept Visa, Maestro and American Express. They will, I suppose, require a PIN, which is an eternal issue on this forum for cards issued in the USA. The same is for the bus, which probably won't accept cash. Alternatively you can get an Amsterdam and Region Travel Ticket, which at some EUR 19 is rather expensive for this trip, but hassle free.

Second thoughts:
You can easily combine the Muiderslot with a visit to Naarden, a wonderfully preserved fortified town, with the defence works dating back to the 17th century and the town itself much older. Coming from Muiden bus 110 continues to Naarden after having called at Weesp station.
For such a trip the Amsterdam and Region Travel Ticket would make sense.
