Will be traveling from Maastricht to Amsterdam airport. Is it best to go by train to Amsterdam central station and switch to the (rapid rail?) trains to the airport, or just change trains at Utrecht to get one that goes to the airport?

Train schedules recommend the connection at Utrecht as being the fastest and also show that you're usually walking just between platform 5 and platform 7. It should not be necessary to go via Amsterdam Centraal, which takes longer.

Under normal railways operations, you change trains in Utrecht in the same platform. There is no need to go to or through Amsterdam Centraal.
