Gate closure (turnstiles) at Centraal Station Amsterdam

I just returned from Amsterdam. Be forewarned, and if you are traveling into the city from the airport, hang on to your ticket. You will need it to get out through the turnstiles. Also, you can no longer get into the center/rail section of the station, unless you have a ticket to open the turnstiles. If you have a OV Chipcart, it will open the gates and will not charge you, unless you stay longer than an hour. (is my understanding).

Does anyone else have any more information?

My daughter and son in law live in Amsterdam, and they didn't even know about it.

I think it was briefly mentioned on the news. Now the situation at Amsterdam Centraal is the same as at nearly all larger stations.

Yes, entrance to the stations all over the country was controlled when we visited last summer.. We were given a second piece of paper with our clipkasrt's that a scan on it to enter through gate.

An active OV-Chipkaart can be used for access to the gated areas for up to 20 minutes, as long as you check-out.

International paper tickets can be used to gain access on specific gates that have barcode readers. All tickets sold online on Thalys, DB, RailEurope to or from the Netherlands have barcodes. Maybe there will be an issue with certain more exotic full-price DB tickets sold at counters.

You can cross the central station to the riverbank of the IJ (where the bus station and ferries to Amsterdam Noord are) on two major underground shopping galleries (big alleys that connect both sides of the station outside the gated area) without any need to check in and out. You cannot go to the restaurants near platform 1 (not that they were remarkable by any means) or just linger watching trains any longer.

I wonder what this will mean for those traveling on a railpass?

Interesting question. I looked it up and found that the Interrail pass has a barcode which should open the gate. I have no idea whether it works the same way with the Eurail pass.
Anyway, in case of a problem, there is an information pillar near the gates from which you can contact the personnel to open the gate.

I used a rail pass two years ago at the gates and it worked just fine. It has a QR Code printed on it that will open the gates.
