Garbage in Amsterdam

I watched a vlog in which two women from Britain visit Amsterdam. One had been about 5years ago, the other was a first time. They couldn’t get over the filth on the street in touristy areas. Even compared to bad parts of London. Then they noticed all the restaurants advertising Full English Fry Ups. The two visitors felt Amsterdam had been ruined by Brit drunks. Their visit was June 2022.

Then I came across this: https://houseofhospitality.amsterdam/uploads/pdf/infographic-antisocial_behavior_of_tourists.pdf

Overtourism, just as Rick’s latest FB post described.

That infographic pdf is from a 2019 bachelor thesis of a student at the hotel school of The Hague - not exactly an article from The Economist.

And why not post the link to the vlog?

I recall comments from a decade ago stating that Amsterdam was a dirty city. Many of the residents thought that the council weren’t emptying the bins often enough in densely populated areas and the numbers of tourists didn’t help, so litter was being dropped elsewhere. It’s not a new issue.

You can probably find other vlogs blaming some other nationality. Is one vlog with posting about?

I am pretty sure that you can take almost any major city in the US or Europe and make a complaint about trash. In the US you can also add in complaints about the homeless population....... Several years ago there were some interesting news articles about the incredible rat problem near the Louvre caused by tourists eating outside and then not dealing with their trash appropriately. I'm not sure complaining solves much.

I think the only real take away here is that we need to make sure that we are not part of the trash problem wherever we are. If each one of us takes responsibility for our actions, then it is progress.
