First 2 nights after the airport

After being stationed in Germany several years ago, we have visited there at least once a year for the last 12 years. Now Delta has direct flights Salt Lake City RTD Schiphol. We are thinking of changing-up and making a circle route by train from Schiphol next April. Possible Itinerary:

AMS Schiphol
???
Münster
Aachen
Bruges
Antwerp ( or Mechelen)
Leiden
AMS Schiphol

Amsterdam is the obvious choice for our first stop but I have visited there 4 times before. It is a beautiful city but I would like to see something new. Any suggestions for a first stop (2 days) in the Netherlands on the way to Münster? Does anyone spot in flaws in our plan? Thanks in advance.

You'll like Utrecht. Some 30 mins from Schiphol airport on direct trains, running 4 times per hour. Connections to Münster should not be a problem.
Mechelen is a nice city. I found it a good place to stay for a few nights, with Antwerpen and Brussel around the corner.
Have a look whether you'd prefer Gent, a lively university city, over Brugge, which to my taste is too much an open-air museum.

Thanks Ton. Utrecht looks like a good choice. I actually got the idea for Mechelen from a post by you.

I will research Gent. I best like university towns in Germany and assume that I would in Belgium as well.
