Family Biking in Gouda

Our family will be in the Netherlands for a week in June. Our kids are 6 and 8 and are adequate bike riders, but by no means ready for city biking. I would like to bike around the windmills and farms near Gouda but would love any insight anyone has! I would be interested in a private bike tour, but the Green Cow Bike Tours that are recommended are out of business.

Depending upon how tech and/or internet savvy you are, there are a lot of resources out there that can let you plan your own adventure and tour.

Two tools come to mind immediately:

  1. the "national" bike mapping system that is great for planning routes with an online builder and an app (for iOS and probably android) called Fietsknoop. It is literally a waypoint/numbering system that is across the country (and Belgium) linking the gazillion miles of paths and bike routes.
  2. a route mapping site called komoot that shows you plenty of routes - cycling or hiking - that folks have uploaded and often come with more detailed information. Komoot also works well - an app plus ability to work with GPS computers.

If you decide to go out on your own, I would just recommend getting a cheap cell phone handle bar mount ($20 on amazon) and to wear an AirPod/wireless ear bud in one ear (not both) to hear any point-to-point directions that will be given by an app. A standalone bike GPS is better in most cases (no app, no AirPods, long battery life) but most folks don't have one.
