We are staying 1 extra night in Amsterdam following a river cruise. Our flight back to the US will leave at 08:30 the next morning. I can't decide if we should stay the night in Amsterdam Central (which means a very early hotel departure) or store our luggage for the day at the Central terminal and head back to an Airport hotel later in the evening. Any suggestions? I've never been to Amsterdam before this trip.

On my trip last summer,. I spent my last day in Amsterdam. I flew into Amsterdam in the morning from Bergen, Norway. Checked into the Airport Sheraton and then took the train into Amsterdam for the day. Returned to the airport hotel about 9:00 that night by train. The train service is frequent and convenient.
Since it was a major festival weekend, none of the recommended RS hotels in central Amsterdam were available so I didn't have much choice about staying at the airport. I was glad I did as it made the morning of departure to the US pretty easy. My departure was around 10;00 in the morning, so you will be scrambling a little more with your earlier flight.
Don't underestimate how long it will take to check a bag, pass through security, passport control and everything else before getting to the gate. Everything went fine but it did take much longer than expected.

Best to stay at a hotel at the airport the night before an early departure. You have no idea how many times the train service to Schiphol is disrupted/ delayed by minor things that could cause you to miss your flight or catch it just in time , making you a nervous wreck.
