Greetings from Haarlem! I've been here barely an hour and am already charmed. Can't wait to start exploring.
Could anyone tell me what a Dutch equivalent to a Monoprix or even a Boots-like store would be? I have a few basic items I need to pick up and maybe a hair straightener too.

Google Haarlem pharmacy. You are surrounded by them and should be close to something.
Etos is the big health and beauty chain in Holland:

Indeed Etos or Kruidvat. For the hair straightener you might succeed at Blokker and possibly HEMA, too.
HEMA would be my first choice, easy to find in Haarlem. And the Etos if not.... you'll be fine. There may even be a hair straightener at Aldi.
