Daytrips from Amsterdam - Giethoorn & Tulip Fields

I'm headed to Amsterdam in April; I'd like to do a day trip to Giethoorn and also to see the tulips. For seeing the tulips, are there any really great places to see them near Giethoorn or should we do Keukenhof? Are there any tour companies you would recommend? Or is it easy to rent a car for a single day and drive around independently? I'd like to try to package these into 1 day trip but not sure if that's too much? Thanks!

Two years ago, we booked a tour that began and ended less than 1 km from Amsterdam Central. The tour included bus transportation and admission to Keukenhof (where we walked around the gardens on our own for about four hours) a visit to a windmill community, a cheese maker, and a wooden shoe factory. Also included was a ferry ride and a coupon for an Amsterdam canal ride. This was an all day tour - beginning around 8:00 and ending after 20:00. There was quite a bit of time in the bus, but seeing the landscape was interesting. The travelers (four bus loads full) were divided into groups with common language - our bus was Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and English - adding an additional language learning opportunity as we heard essentially the same description repeated in those languages. It was a delightful day - and not terribly expensive.....I think less than 100 Euros/person. It is my belief that these tours are numerous and some contain other points of interest.
