Day trip to Kinderdijk

Part of our trip to Amsterdam this coming fall includes a day trip to Kinderdijk, sometime between Tuesday, 9/29 and Fri. 10/02, depending which day offers the best weather, as we want a nice day to bike while there.

Back in 2018, we took a WaterBus from Rotterdam to Kinderdijk that required a transfer along the way. They now offer a direct route on a Watershuttle, which I'm interested in doing instead; it's a little faster.

I am wondering if at the time of year we will be there (a little less busy than spring or during the height of summer) I should book tickets online for the shuttle ahead of time, or just purchase them from steward once there (which is an option). We'd take the first time slot (9:10) in the morning. But since they only run every hour, I'd hate to not be able to get on due to crowds, as we really want to maximize our time at Kinderdijk.

Anyone have any current experience with the availability of seating on the shuttle when getting tix on-site and day-of?

DH and I took the watershuttle directly from Rotterdam to Kinderdijk this past April. We were able to purchase the tickets without any issues from the steward with no hassle. From what I've heard, April is the height of tourists season so I can imagine it would be even easier in the fall.

That's just what I wanted to hear....;) We too loved Kinderdijk many years ago and are excited to go back! We had a perfect day weather-wise then, and it made biking and enjoying the scenery so much nicer. It was one of our favorite days in the Netherlands! Such interesting history....

Did you check which schedule the water ferries will be following- summer or winter? I believe they only run three days a week on the winter schedule, but I don't remember the date of the change,
We were there this past April, 2026, and many folks bought tickets after they had boarded. And- there were lots of empty seats.
Kinderdijk is incredibly beautiful and peaceful. I wish you a great trip. Enjoy!

Yes Pat! I just today looked up the schedule... the Water Shuttle ( 30 minutes direct to Kinderdiijk) runs from Rotterdam to Kinderdijk on the "summer schedule" which is described as Monday - Sunday, March 23 thru October 5, 2026. ( We are just making the cut-off).

(Example times according the the website are: 9:10, 10:20, 11:30, 12:40, 13:50, 15:00, 16:10, 17:20. )
One way ticket is 9.75.E; return ticket is 19.50E

Can buy online, look up kids rates, seems easy to get on....sorry don't have website as I'm writing this, look up " WaterShuttle, Kinderdijk, Molenkade

Another April 2026 traveler. We bought tickets in advance but many bought tickets once onboard. We took the first shuttle of the day; it was perhaps one-fifth full on a Thursday.

Mid June 2026 on a Monday. We biked to Kinderdijk and then took the watershuttle back. I bought the tickets on my phone while we were waiting for the shuttle. There were about 20 people on the shuttle and some racks for bikes at the back.
