Hi, we are taking a river cruise and have a stop in Rotterdam. I have always really wanted to visit the Mauritshuis to see their Vermeers.
How do-able would it be to accomplish this on my own, as the cruise line doesnt offer it as an excursion? I am specifically wondering about the ease of public transportation and reliability of it so as not to miss the boat (literally) and also the time constraints. How long do I need to get back and forth and have a reasonable amount of time at the museum.
Thanks in advance for any advice you have!
Assuming you take a taxi to the train station, it should take about an hour each way to and from the museum. How long you spend there is up to you. I love the Dutch and Flemish painters, so would probably spend several hours there. Prof. Google suggests 90 minutes. What hours is your boat docked?
There is no need for the taxi-train combo. Just walk up to the metro station close to the cruise terminal and take the direct metro E to The Hague. Get off at final stop The Hague central and walk to the Mauritshuis in about 10 minutes. Total travel time should be about 1 hour. No need to worry about tickets, just tap your credit card to open the gate to the metro station and tap again to exit the station in The Hague.
We visited the museum two weeks ago. Public transportation in the Netherlands is the easiest system across Europe--you won't have any problems. I would recommend you check out the Maurithuis website to ensure they are open on the day that you plan to visit and to purchase admission tickets in advance--which will lock in a specific entry time for you. I also recommend that you download the Maurithuis app which will help guide you through the museum. If you are only looking for highlights, the app has a specific highlights tour that should take around 1.5 hours. And, if you have the time, I would also recommend that you consider visiting the M. C. Escher museum which is about a five minute walk from the Maurithuis https://www.escherinhetpaleis.nl/?lang=en; and, it shouldn't take longer than one hour or so to visit. Enjoy your visit,
