My husband and I will be in Amsterdam the second week of June. I thought about taking a train out of the city to visit Zandvoort, National Park Zuid-Kennemerland, and then Haarlem one day. Maybe a bike ride in the area? Any thoughts about this as a day trip from Amsterdam or other suggestions?
That is a good bike ride. The houses and woods out there are quite nice, and then eventually you pop out at the beach.
It can be quite windy - usually off the North Sea - around the dunes and they are the highest thing around.
Careful of other cyclists crossing your path.
Another nice cycling tour around Haarlem is to leave the city in the north-east and go to Spaarndam (of Hans Brinkers fame) via Penningsveer (with a late 19th-century fortress) and Spaarnwoude (with a 13th-century church). Back to Haarlem along the broad river Spaarne. All very quiet and peaceful, and will take you around 1,5 hrs.
Thank you everyone for the advice!
