Couple questions on our first trip

We are flying out tomorrow for our first trip to the Netherlands. We have a pretty full itinerary including Haarlem, Amsterdam, Leiden, Delft and a day at Keukenhof.

Our day in Delft we are hoping to do some bike riding outside the city. Any recommendations on a good bike trip maybe something around 2 hours ?

Also we currently have one open day with nothing planned. We are considering Utrecht or maybe a trip above Amsterdam to Edam, Volendam, Marken. Not looking for any museums on this day hoping to spend more time outside sightseeing. Would either of these be better for a first visit ?

I’m a bit confused. If you don’t know where to bike to from Delft, why do you want to bike there? Did someone tell you to bike there? If so, where did they bike to? Delft is pretty boxed in between other cities and the scenery isn’t particularly nice.
If it’s only to get the biking in the Netherlands experience, I would like to suggest you to consider to do your biking at The Keukenhof. Depending on what day you’ll visit, the flowers in the production fields around the Keukenhof are still in bloom. It’s a marvelous sight to see the huge blocks of color in the countryside. Visit Keukenhof in the morning and bike around the tulip fields in the afternoon.

These are 2 very different day trips and you gave little details as to why you are deciding between these two. What’s the appeal for you? On what day do you want to do this?

I appreciate that me asking you questions instead of giving you answers, is not what you wanted to hear when you posted your thread. I however believe that you should do the things that appeal to you and interest you, and not what someone else thinks you should do. So me asking these questions is to try and figure out what it is that you want to do.

Edited to add: Another thing to consider for both your biking trip and your open day trip, is that we’re currently having typical April weather. Sunny and dry one moment, cold winds, rain and even hail the next. Last weekend I sat on an outside terrace wearing a short sleeved t-shirt, today I had to wear my thick winter coat to go outside. A biking trip today would be no fun at all.

We did several rides out of Delft (we rented bikes from Halfords in Delft). A nice one was to Rotterdam where we parked the bikes, did the RS walking tour and other wandering, and then rode back a different route.

Another longer ride - several hours but hugely worth it - was heading east out of town, then a swing south and west, and almost a figure eight to the SW of Delft before returning home. That ride was a BLAST in that it took in a lot of countryside, but also we took several ferry rides :) to cross canals. One included the self-propelled variety, so that was fun laughing with a Dutch family on the small ferry with us. Lots to see and do, and plenty of places to stop and relax.

We used the Fietsknoop app on my phone to build and follow routes. A GREAT app. Our hotel in Delft had preprinted rides using the marker system, and I used those to create a larger route from two smaller ones.

maybe a trip above Amsterdam to Edam, Volendam, Marken.

To stay on the "bike" theme, that visit - from Amsterdam to Edam and Volendam is easily (and quite fun) done by bike too. :D It will potentially include the big ferry to N. Amsterdam but, also, if hitting Marken, could include that ferry too. A reasonable ride - especially as you will park the bikes, wander the towns, and then ride some more, and keep breaking it up.

Wind and weather, obviously impact bike riding, but you'll know your limits.
