City Passes

We will be visiting Amsterdam for the first time in September for five days. We are in our 70's with some slightly limited mobility. Does anyone have any advice regarding whether a GoCity Pass, Hop On Hop Off Pass, or Amsterdam Pass would be more suited? Of course we would like to see the museums and highlights, but we would also like some flexibility.

Which card is best really depends on your plan. You need to examine what’s offered, how that lines up with your itinerary and then crunch the numbers to see if you are saving anything.

Our family has used the IAmsterdam card before with great success.

It includes transportation within the city and a long list of attractions. However, on our last trip to Amsterdam, our touring priorities didn’t match the offer so we just bought individual tickets. I’m not familiar with the other cards you mentioned.

With mobility issues, I think that you may find the public transportation options comfortable to use, plentiful and convenient.

If you can check back with more detail about your plan, I’m sure that the community here can give you more specific advice.

We did a little spreadsheet for this. First, we listed the museums that we wanted to go to and the entry fee. Then we checked the list of included museums for each pass, and then compared the cost for the included museums without a pass with the cost of each pass. There is a good article that compares the passes, search for "Amsterdam Pass or Card? City Cards Review & Comparison". My husband and I found it to be very helpful.

I did what Mar Moss suggested - cost out each thing you might want to do and see which pass works for you. I have used the iAmsterdam pass twice, but it used to cover Van Gogh museum (it does not any longer). None of the passes cover Anne Frank house. If you want to do that, make sure you book ahead and probably as soon as possible - they are currently selling tickets as far out as September 10 (and they go very, very quickly).

There may be some museums that require a timed reservation even if you're using a pass; be sure to check on that so you don't miss out in something you really want to see.

Since you mentioned mobility, look carefully to see whether your sights have senior discounts (if you qualify), because that can really affect the financial value of a city pass that doesn't have a senior discount.
