Car to visit Edam/Volendam/Hoorn - am I crazy?

Hello fellow travelers! My husband, kiddo (6 years), our babysitter, and I will be in the Netherlands for about 60 days this summer, bouncing around between several different cities.

For one of the weeks, we'd like to visit the smaller towns to the north of Amsterdam: Edam, Volendam, Marken, Hoorn, Alkmaar, etc. We are thinking of renting a car for the week to explore the area. We're looking at an apartment on Airbnb in the town of Middenbeemster that indicates that there is street parking nearby, and I've found a car rental for about 250 euros for the week. I know that bikes are the norm, but having to rent three adult bikes plus a child seat of some sort would be actually just as (if not more) expensive as the car car (even taking fuel costs into account).

My question is - would I be crazy to rent a car in the Netherlands for visiting those smaller cities? Are there other factors I should consider in the car vs. bike decision? We're ok with parking on the outskirts of towns and walking 10-15 minutes into the city center., and my husband has driven in several other European countries (England, Italy, France, Germany) with no issues. Of course we won't be driving the car into any big city (planning to pick up and drop off at Schipol) before continuing on by train.

As always, I appreciate the input of this forum so much!

I have driven to the Netherlands (from England) many times. Sometimes a car with access to trains makes sense.

Perhaps in your case it would.

Just a few things about driving in the Netherlands. Be aware that the national speed limit is lower than some surrounding countries and that the speed camera is a Dutch invention. And that there are plenty of them.

I've parked in Edam two or three times with no issue - but you may have to put on your parking space hunting hat as the town is small and there isn't an abundance of parking.

You have to have the appropriate baby seat / booster for the kiddo. It is the law. It will be attached by ISO Fix connectors.

Bicycles have the right of way. There are a lot of bicycles.

I have parked in most of the places you mention. I think a 6 year old might enjoy the Zuiderzee museum in Enkhuizen. I haven't been back for a few years, so my info is old, but it used to be called Open Air Museum and was distinctly geared to kiddoes. You'll need to see how it fits with your plans. https://www.zuiderzeemuseum.nl/

Enjoy your trip

In this case a car is a good idea. I am not so familiar with that part of the Netherlands but Midden-Beemster looks nice and is wel located for the places you like to visit. Volendam is actually a tourist trap but you can have a photoshoot there of the family in traditional clothing or the place for instance for taking the ferry to Marken. Or if of interest De Rijp a few km from Midden-Beemster the starting point for a boat trip through the countryside.

You can also explore the countryside and drive through lovely places like Broek in Waterland, Zuiderwoude, Ransdorp etc. south of Edam/Volendam. A car is very convenient for doing this. There is a TI in Midden-Beemster, they can certainly help you with this and much more. Know that Beemster Polder where Midden-Beemster belongs to is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, so always interesting.

There is a TI in Midden-Beemster

just to say the sign will likely read VVV which is a Dutch abbreviation for TI.

Huge thank you both Nigel and Wil. I think it will make sense in our situation to do the rental car for that area. With bikes being so prevalent in the Netherlands, I just wanted a sanity check.

We will definitely have a car seat for our kiddo. His safety is obviously the #1 priority.

I have the Zuiderzee museum on our to-do list, as he loves kid-friendly museums and that sounds right up his alley. We'll be in the Netherlands for several weeks, so are excited to mix in some smaller towns along with the larger cities.

Appreciate the recommendations!

Busses are a great way to have access to these towns. Sometime they have special tourist offers for all day tickets for destinations north of Amsterdam. If this doesn’t work for you, your rent a car option for a week seems doable and well thought out.

Car would be great. You won't want to drive in those town centers but a car would be good for easily getting to and fro, especially with 6-yo. We just spent a week in Hoorn and it's beyond gorgeous.

Keep in mind, every single of one of these adorable towns are ridiculously adorable, charming, quaint and, did I say adorable? Meaning, you cannot go wrong with any historic Dutch town.

If you only wanted visit Edam, Volendam and Marken, there is a bus that goes from the Centraale Station in Amsterdam.
I was there in 2017, and found out about it in a tourist map or brochure I picked up.
It was E10 round trip and went to all three…I got off at Edam, then got
back on to go to Volendam, and at Volendam got a small ferry to Marken, then the bus back to Amsterdam from Marken.
I spent a couple of hours in each.
It was a really lovely day out….all the towns are charming!
Your child might enjoy the buses.
