We have 2 spare nights in Amsterdam in August 2018 before starting a tour.
Can anyone recommend a small village/town within approx 1 hrs train/bus ride from Schipol Airport that we can stay in.
We are looking for canals/windmills.
2 Couples are travelling together so we would need 2 rooms.
Thanks Karen
Leiden, Haarlem, Katwijk, Noordwijk?
Leiden is 20 mins from Schiphol (at least 4 trains/hour), has a lot of canals, and prides itself with a huge original mid-18th-century windmill at the very edge of the historical centre.
I don't remember seeing the windmill, but Leiden was very nice. I only went on my way to Keukenhof, but ended up enjoying it a lot. It has the Netherlands' oldest university, and while Delft and Utrecht also have universities, of the three it was the only one that looked or felt like a "college town." It also has a science museum, where I learned that kidney dialysis and EKG's are originally from the Netherlands.
Travel via train is the cheapest and most convenient way to reach Amsterdam from Schipol Airport. There are also some other travel options such as by bus, shuttle and taxi. I suggest you to choose Dutch Railways.
Thank you for everyones input - much appreciated..Karen
A new hotel, Niu Dairy, just opened in Haarlem this March. The few reviews are all positives so far. They are offering great prices with breakfast. You can view their website or booking.com. It's in a good location near the center of town.
