Bus or train to Haarlem from Schiphol?

We are staying at ML hotel in Harlem.

The hotel suggests taking the train. Someone else suggested Bus 30. We will be traveling with carry-ons only

To my eye, it looks like the walk from the bus stop at Centrum/Verwalt would be shorter than taking the train and getting off at the Haarlem station. We are not afraid to walk..just not with rolling carry-ons.

Pros or cons to either mode of transportation?

Thanks!

It’s very strange for your hotel to suggest the train. There are no direct trains from the airport to Haarlem, so if you take the train you would need to change trains. If you take the bus it will be direct and take you right into the city center.

Oops...yes, bus 300!

I thought it odd the hotel suggested a train.

Glad to hear both of you confirm the bus is the way to go!

Many thanks!

We took the bus from Haarlem to the airport when we flew out (we didn’t fly in there) and it was easy and inexpensive.

It is not odd for the hotel to recommend a train. Most Europeans will prefer a train over a bus, and find changing trains a non-issue. Walking some distance with rolling carry-ons is also not really something we shy away from. If I was staying there I would take the train...

The OP isn’t “most Europeans”. They’re tourists arriving at Schiphol early in the morning after a transatlantic flight. A direct bus is so much easier in that case.
At the very least the hotel should have explained the various options. Even the travel planner on the website and app of the railway company NS shows both train and bus options for this particular journey.

If you take Bus 300 get off at Centrum-Verwulft, it’s the second to last stop. It’s about a 5 minute walk to your hotel where it’s about a 12 minute walk from the Central Station. It makes a difference when you’re dragging a suitcase, no matter how small.
