Budget hotels- anyone stayed at Hotel Atlantis or Hotel Iris?

Hi. My husband and I are headed to Europe next summer for a few weeks. We are staying in Amsterdam for a few days and hope to find a budget hotel in a good area.

Since we'll be out sight seeing most of the time, the room isn't overly important, but we'd like a clean, convenient location preferably with a private bathroom.

I've been looking at the above hotels.... Iris has a nice garden and is on the canal, but I've read the walls are thin and it's pretty loud.

Our other possibility is the Atlantis- near the market and a park.

We also thought about Olive Bed & Breakfast, but it sounds like you are sharing a lot of common space (kitchen, bathroom, etc).

Any thoughts? Thanks.

We stayed at the Owl Hotel once and you may want to have a look at it. Well located, friendly place. The first time, we stayed at a hilarious B&B, where the water from the bathroom hand basin ran not through a pipe but just from the sink into a hole in the floor. Breakfast was brought to our room by our cheerful hostess and consisted of a whole loaf of sliced bread, a pound of butter and boiled eggs. We laughed for days about that.

Thanks, Norma. I'll check out the OWL. Your story of the loaf of bread and butter made me laugh.

Amsterdam is one of those really popular cities where rooms can be very expensive. And there are so many places to stay--most of which are really busy on the weekends.
One of my tricks to find rooms is to decide on what neighborhood you want to stay in. Then go to GoogleMaps.com for that area and click "+, +, +"--magnifying the area. All of a sudden, hotel icons will pop up which you can click on. The click will take you to their direct websites. You can check them out on TripAdvisor to see what's being said.
We used to stay out by the big "football" field in Amsterdam South in a bed and breakfast. Last time we were there, we went by to found the B&B had been split up and sold as condos. That's not uncommon as residential home prices are now out of sight in this city.
Another visit, we stayed at a business hotel just past the airport on A4--Hotel Schiphol. I can honestly say it was the nicest place we've ever stayed in Europe. Their courtesy car dropped us at the airport where we caught the train into Amsterdam city center in about 12 minutes. hotelschiphol.nl The rooms are beyond huge, and it's the best buy in the area.

I stayed at Motel One in Amsterdam. It is a little bit out of the center of Amsterdam, but it is convenient to a train station and there is a streetcar stop right out front that can take you anywhere in the city. I like the Motel One since they are simple, modern rooms and the prices are really reasonable. Breakfast is usually nice, and there is a grocery store conveniently next door.
