Biking near Keukenhof?

My husband and I are visiting Keukenhof in May. We purchased a combination tickets online from Amsterdam to Keukenhof. After our visit we would like to rent bikes and see more of the flowered countryside. Any suggestions on where to rent bikes? I would love to hear from other travelers who have done this before.

Thank you!

You can rent bikes right in the parking lot of Keukenhof. They are 10 euro for the whole day, and they will give you maps of the four different routes you can take (you can also view them on their website - we followed route 2). Cycling through the various tulip and hyacinth fields is AWESOME!!! You will love it. Here's a link to the bike rental place.

I am so glad you asked this question - we will be there in two weeks and I'd love to do something like this! Dawn - I'm going to assume, this being the NL - that it is pretty flat?

as a pancake. Stay off the roads and stick to the dirt and paths and no car interference. Even on most of the minor roads, just a minor interference with cars.

I'm hoping to be right there again in about 2 weeks myself.

Cool Nigel...two weeks from today we will be on our last day in Amsterdam and heading for Dordrecht the next day.

Yes, as Nigel pointed out - very flat. It can be windy though, so if you're going against the wind it can be a bit of a tougher pedal. It's nothing too strenuous though - I'm not the fittest person in the world and I managed just fine! :)

There's just something about biking on a vacation... it is pure joy!!

Just wanted to add something else for you to consider... when we went, we got there about 10am and the entrance was jam packed. We decided to rent the bikes first, and visit the garden in the afternoon. This worked out really well for us. I was talking to a woman inside Keukenhof and she said she was there in the morning and it was WAY too crowded. She actually left and came back about 2pm and she said it was like night and day. The park is open until 7:30pm, and it was beautiful seeing the gardens in the afternoon/early evening light!

So we did our Keukenhof visit today.

We didn't get started until late. The wait for the bus at the airport was 45 min or so, (we got there about...noon-ish) and unfortunately, we ended up having to stand on the bus, and the driver was sadistic with the heat cranked. Ugh. Not fun. We should have waited for the next bus at the head of the line so we could get a seat.

So, we decided to do the bike tour first. The parking lot was pretty full and a lot of people going in. We arrived back a little before 4pm (we got slightly misplaced on our journey...you really gotta watch out for the direction signs!). Absolutely beautiful.

The displays were not at all crowded, and lovely outside. From what I've heard others say, I think we made the right choice to wait until later. We overheard a couple the day before telling someone they arrived first thing, and by 10am, the crowds were nuts.

We stayed until about 6:30 or so. I was getting all flowered out by then, but so worth it. And my butt cheeks aren't happy with over two hours on a bike...lol.

So I'd recommend doing the bike tour first if you don't get there until mid morning (if the weather is good) and maybe going in mid afternoon.
