biking from Amsterdam to Haarlem for an overnight....plus bikes on public transport?

I'm thinking of doing an overnight trip from Amsterdam to Haarlem during my 8 day visit in August and wondered about doing it via bike. I gather that it's about 12 miles (starting from Hotel Brouwer in Amsterdam), that renting a bike and storing my luggage overnight at, say, the train station shouldn't be an issue.

The one thing I'm wondering about is, if for some reason, I decide I don't want to bike back the next day (if for example, it's raining hard or I need to get back more quickly) , is it possible to bring a bike on public transport?

Are there any other considerations to take into account in planning this? I'm thinking a light daypack would be all I'd need to bring, that the route must be easy enough to follow and I assume, a pretty ride?

thanks!

You just have to buy the bike a ticket. Or at least that was the case a few years ago when we rode the trains and took bikes.

The most direct route Amsterdam - Halfweg - Haarlem isn't particularly scenic as it parallels a fast highway, and a busy train line. If you route a few more miles and com along the big ship canal it is very scenic and you can see the dike with the plaque about Hans Brinker - and the silver skates - who saved the Netherlands by plugging the dike with his finger.

Regular bikes are admitted on national trains except on peak times and require a fare supplement. Folded bikes are admitted at all times.

Rules for buses, subways and trams are different.

As the train comes in look for the door with a bike symbol on the door and above the door. Not all trains have it but if there is one, that's where the bike should go.
