Bike trip in Amsterdam

I will be in Amsterdam with my son who is 25 for 2 days at the beginning of August. We would like to take a short bike trip to see the country side. Is there a half day trip where we can see windmills? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Right in town there must be at least a half dozen. There's a good one out at Edam which is maybe fifteen miles away. The iconic ones are close to Rotterdam at Kinderdijk which must be about thirty-five or forty miles away.

In 2012, we rented bikes by the train station and rode the free ferry that leaves behind the bus station. From there, it was a quick ride out into the Polderland. We had all day, so we biked to Edam, then to Voldendam, took the ferry to Marken, and back to Amsterdam. This ride passed through many villages along the way and was quite picturesque. My sister and her husband are going in September but did not want to take a whole day. I advised her to rent the bikes and go to some of the villages closer to Amsterdam. (Zunderdorp, Broek in Waterland, etc. A fast cylcer could probably get to Edam and back in 1/2 a day, if they did not spend a lot of time in any of the villages. As for windmills, we did see one in Edam. There may be more in other villages, but we did not see any. (we did see the modern style, but not the traditional style). Here is a link to the article I read that inspired our bike trip. We loved it...my favorite day in the Netherlands.

You will need a good map of the area..I printed one at home before we left. The bike place also gave us a small map with some routes. Have a great time.

Our staff have enjoyed www.yellowbike.nl tours within the city and they also offer a half-day, 15-mile countryside group excursion.
