Hello helpful travelers : I would like to install a free train app on my phone for a trip to The Netherlands in April. It is handy to have real-time info and scheduling options in my pocket. Thanks for tips and recommendations. Susan
Not sure if it’s the best, but there is really only 1 app; the one from the national railway company called NS. They have 2 apps; one called “NS” and one called “NS International”. The first one contains all info about domestic train travel within the Netherlands, the second one is about international trains. The language of both apps can be switched to English.
And if you want to include busses, trams and metros in addition to trains, try the 9292 app.
The NS app also shows metros, trams, busses and ferries. I find it to be more user friendly than the 9292 app.
I second the NS app, easy to use, though with tap-to-pay, I do not use it to buy train tickets, just to find the best train option for may route. I do buy tickets on NS International if crossing a border, as tap will not work for that.
If I am in a city and getting from point a to b, then good old Google Maps suffices, including showing tram and bus options. Many out there like Citymapper, especially those on iPhones (but apps are available for all phones) for what they cover, they cover well.
Thank you all for that useful info. I have the 9292 app and will add NS to see which I prefer - or maybe both. I have used Citymapper for London and Paris. Not sure it adds much beyond Googlemaps, but sometimes it is nice to have a backup. If anyone is recently familiar with using Citymapper in Amsterdam and/or Rotterdam as well as cities in Belgium, I am interested in your experience. Thank you all, Susan
