Best times for Anne Frank House in October

I don’t think it matters greatly, but you may want to build in a little downtime for whatever type of activity restores you afterward. I’m a cold hard woman, and I am here to tell you I walked out of that museum and promptly sat on a bench and full-on sobbed. Something like a walk in a park or whatever is healing to your group might be just something to have in your back pocket. I’ve never reacted to a place like that in the decades since.

There's no wrong time, really. I'm not necessarily a museum cafe person, but we went in right after to get a beverage and process for a bit before we went outside and strolled around to get fresh air. It's a lot to absorb so I wouldn't calculate your visit in the same way you calculate scheduling other museum visits. It takes a lot of emotional energy. And because we all grew up as children reading The Diary of Anne Frank, being there feels like losing a dear friend.

For our recent April trip, we went online during the day, and found evening tickets just sitting there! The times were 7:45pm, and it worked well. We had dinner a block away. We still had day light walking back to the train station (in April,) and we felt very safe.

Pat, we arrive in Amsterdam Sunday morning and there are later entry tickets available now but I would rather not do it late on the day of arrival since we will be very tired coming from the US. Tickets for Monday and beyond will be available tomorrow morning. :)

After reading the responses so far I’m not sure a morning visit first thing sounds as good because of the heaviness of it all. Or at the very least I won’t plan anything right after so we have time to decompress and ease back into the day. Does anyone know if the late mornings and afternoons are busy because of school tours?

Kimberly, it's always busy, as a specific number of people are let in at 15 minutes intervals, all day long, and all time slots get sold out. It feels really crowded in the last few rooms, as folks from many time slots linger and reflect.
I can understand why you wouldn't want an evening slot your first day.
I felt the walk back in the evening after our visit gave us time to think.

I have gone in the morning and evening, as noted it is always pretty busy. Going on your arrival day in the evening is probably best avoided, you'll be tired and it is a rather heavy way to start your trip. I too am not an outwardly emotive person and after my first visit (in the late evening) I was quite glad to have the privacy and quiet of my hotel room to go back to. My morning visit was my second time going, this time with my nephew. Perhaps because I had been there before it didn't strike the emotional chord with me. If you decide to go in the evening, don't take the very last time slot because if I recall correctly it doesn't give you very much time (30 or 40 minutes).

Not only did I get tickets, but I got on so quickly that I had every time slot available! I decided to get the 30 minute intro program. Instead of the first entry time (9:15am), I chose the second (10:15am) since it's our first morning after arriving and want to make sure we are clear headed and rested. I thought there would be other time options (9:30, 9:45) like I saw when I checked this past week to get a feel of the site, but I realized after I purchased them that the other times I saw were for the tickets only option. So we will not be the 2nd group inside like I mistakenly thought, and it might be more crowded, but we got tickets so that is far better than not having anything. It appears that mid-October isn't as crazy as those tickets during the spring tulip season or summer since I saw there are still some late afternoon and evening tickets available the week before we arrive.

I plan to do a Jordaan neighborhood walk after and grab some lunch with the family to unwind and process after we finish. The Pancake Bakery or something like that might be a nice way to ease back into the rest of our day. :)

You are very wise to do the program ahead of the visit. Even though I thought I knew the story of Anne Frank, I had of course forgotten a lot. The instructors are really good and reviewing the information and getting the context makes the visit more meaningful, I believe.

For anyone finding this thread later: tickets go on sale every Tuesday at 10:00 Amsterdam time, for visits six weeks ahead. Count back six weeks from the date you want and be online a few minutes before that Tuesday morning. If your date has already passed that window, keep checking anyway. Cancellations put tickets back now and then, but that is luck, not a schedule. If groups cancel, sometimes tickets become available
