We would like to take a day trip from Amsterdam to see some windmills and possibly other traditional Dutch culture. Any recommendations on best place to go for that? Thanks.
That's the Zaanse Schans, an open-air museum preserving the industrial heritage of this area. Some dozen windmills and traditional crafts, like cheese making. A 10-minute walk from the railway station Zaandijk Zaanse Schans, which is less than 20 minutes from Amsterdam Centraal. Use the NS train planner for practical information.
If you have a full-day trip to make, go to Kinderdijk, then combine it with a mid/late afternoon stroll in Dordrecht.
We visited ZS on our last trip and the windmills were not running because there was no wind. We were allowed to look inside the windmills which was interesting and the village is a fun place to visit. But try to check ahead and make certain things are up and running. I don't know about windmills in Delft but it looks like a nice day trip from Amsterdam.
