My wife and I want to take a bike tour while in Amsterdam. I have researched the web for operators and have become overwhelmed. We are in moderate shape and actually have Townies by Electra as our go to bikes at home so riding will not be a problem Does someone have a good experience (or bad) with a tour company? Will it be a problem that it may be the 3,4, or 5 of May that we will want to ride--it seems as if there is a big parade in town. BTW, what can you tell us about the parade. Should we forgo some other plan to "camp out" and watch? It seems now as if we should have planned for a day or two more--oh well, we can always go back.
I had a great experience with Yellow Bikes on one of their 3-hour tours, with an enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide. They are popular, so reserving ahead is recommended (www.yellowbike.nl).
Not sure about the parade details, but May 5 is celebrated as Liberation Day for the Netherlands. On that day in 1945, a force of primarily Canadian troops liberated the Netherlands from Nazi German occupation. May 4 is a day of remembrance for those who died in the war, and May 5 is party day, with most happenings on the huge grassy area of Museumplein, between the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum. If you are there on the 5th, I think you could easily do a bike tour, and still enjoy the scene afterwards.
