Attending graduation is Nijmegen and then...

Our son has been attending graduate school in Nijmegen and will graduate in mid-November. We are excited to be there for this event and will spend 3 or 4 days with him there. Beyond that we have no plans but have 5 or 6 days more to explore. If we end up in Amsterdam for several days at the end, what else would you recommend? Given the time of year, indoor activities might be preferable. We are not complete wimps but are a little adverse to wet and cold. Any help getting our creative juices flowing would be greatly appreciated.

Where have you been? No point suggesting places if you have already been there.

From Nijmegen you can literally go anywhere in the Netherlands or even to nearby places in Germany. In order to better help you, you could help us by telling a little bit more about yourself and your interests. Have you already read a guidebook about the Netherlands? Or looked up things online? If so, what things caught your eye?

A warning about the weather though, wet and cold weather is very likely in november. However there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.

Thank you for your speedy responses. We had a three-week trip scheduled in the Netherlands and region for this month that sadly had to be cancelled six months ago. I visited Amsterdam, Leiden and Utrecht at the end (financially and energy-wise) of a 4-month solo vagabond in 1979 and remember surprisingly little of this portion.

We like art, good museums, architecture, historical sites, good food and friendly people. Until now we have been fair weather traveler--spring or summer. Had we gone now we would have definitely gone to Amsterdam, Haarlem, Rotterdam, Den Haag, possibly Utrecht, Leiden and a park that sounded interesting this time of year, but not November. We likely would have done some biking and hiking now off the list.

The reason for my query is due more to traveling in November with limited time than anything else. Where are the best places to visit that time of year? Normally, I would take months to figure it out, but don’t have that luxury this go around. Again, thanks for any and all suggestions

I can’t help but feel you have the wrong idea about the weather in november in the Netherlands. The weather won’t be as warm as in the summer months, but it won’t be freezing cold either. I don’t see any reason why you shouldn’t be able to visit Amsterdam, Haarlem, Rotterdam, Den Haag, Utrecht and Leiden in november. The plus side of visiting in november is that the crowds will be much less crazy compared to the summer. Museums and other sights will all be open and it will be considerably less crowded.
