Are reservations needed for Amsterdam canal trip in August?

I will be in Amsterdam for 3 full days in August. I'll be booking tickets in advance for Anne Frank House, Van Gogh museum and Rijksmuseum. I will not have a cell phone. I would like to take a canal trip that is non-smoking (if possible) and has a live speaker for commentary. Would I have to make a reservation before coming to Amsterdam? I'm not yet sure about which day or time I would be available for canal trip since it would be dependent upon the times I can get museum reservations. Thanks.

Book a canal tour with Captain Jack, you won't be sorry:

Our tour with him last December only had 6 people, including my husband and me. His boat is small and can go places the big boats can't. He provides drinks (alcoholic and soft drinks) and small nibbles.
You must reserve Anne Frank House at the moment tickets go on sale, see this post for more details:

The others you can probably wait until closer to the date to book but I'd do it in advance to get the time you wish.

I agree, book with Jack! He is no longer using that boat though, but it is still a smaller one and only holds 12. We went with him a year ago February and had the best time!

If you want a small boat, which is advisable, you'll most likely have to book in advance. Small boats obviously fill up quicker. Sunset cruises are really in demand. We like Those Damn Boat Guys, but there will be smoking.
Have a great trip!

Absolutely book with Capt. Jack! He is now with Bow's Journeys; we were on the Sophie and it was a terrific time! There were 7 of us on the boat, we learned so much about the history of Amsterdam, and they were great hosts. I would definitely book ahead of time!

Keep in mind that the Pride Boat Parade will be on Saturday August 2 from noon to around 6 pm. I am sure things are busy for a while both before and after those "official" times. I don't know if other commercial boats have to get off certain sections of the canal during that day / those hours (nor whether your visit even encompasses August 2!), but it may be useful to know.
