Archimedes screw/polder mill

Can anyone recommend a specific site where we can see a working archimedes screw powered by a functioning windmill? We'll be in the Utrecht & Amsterdam area so if there are multiple options, something convenient to those locations would be great.

My son wants to see the actual mechanism in action, in situ, for real. Not a model, not a video, not the screw removed to a display location and spinning with an electric motor for educational purposes... He wants to lay eyes on the guts of an honest-to-goodness functioning polder mill.

Bedankt!

will you be there on National Windmill Day? That's when I saw things like that, fairly close to Haarlem.

Given the fact that the video you linked to was posted by The Dam Guide, I’m fairly sure that the windmill in the video is the Molen van Sloten in Amsterdam. However that windmill is undergoing major renovations and just a few days ago they removed the “vijzel”, which is the Dutch term for Archimedes screw, to be repaired. According to the website of the windmill, it should be operational again at the end of August.
So whether or not you can see the vijzel of the Molen van Sloten in action depends on whether or not you’re here. https://molenvansloten.nl/en/

You should also understand that while there are still plenty of polder mills with a vijzel left, very few of them are actually still in use to keep our country dry. The majority of the windmills have lost their purpose, with the water now being pumped away by other means. So the windmill with the vijzel might still be there, but it will only be in action on Windmill Day, public holidays etc etc.

We visited the Adrian windmill in Haarlem when it was in action and it was absolutely amazing. The whole building shook and they did have to shut it down because it was too windy.

I am not sure how often it is functioning but we certainly just turned up while we were in Haarlem without planning ahead. https://www.molenadriaan.nl/en/history/

I am not sure if it's technically a polder mill, but it is a working windmill. And Haarlem is very easy to get to from Amsterdam.

With all due respect, please read the opening post and please understand that the son of the OP doesn’t want to see any random working windmill. The OP’s son is very specific, he wants to see a polder windmill with a vijzel/archimedes screw. Molen Adriaan is not a polder windmill and it doesn’t have a vijzel/archimedes screw. There are thousands of windmills all across the country, but not a lot are of the type the OP’s son wants to see.
The Molen van Sloten is what the OP is looking for and it’s easy to reach as it’s in Amsterdam.
Another option is the Dorregeestermolen, but like most polder windmills it’s in the middle of nowhere; https://maps.app.goo.gl/jGHPYDY8zgGNSoaC8?g_st=ic

It would be helpful to know when the OP is here and whether or not they will have a car.

There are still windmills with Archimedes screws like those near Kinderdijk and the polders north of Amsterdam, but functioning only as auxiliary pumps in case it’s needed. These are the real deal, but most of the time they don’t work and you must be lucky if you can see them in action. Think likely during our National Windmill Day (every year in May) too as Nigel says. You can contact our national organization De Hollandsche Molen for more info, details see this webpage (dutch only) : https://www.molens.nl/

and as well as meeting the screw pump requirement, if the family has a bit of time they could go to the south of Haarlem to the world's largest steam engine, a unique experience, at Haarlem Sea Museum the Cruquius.

https://www.haarlemmermeermuseum.nl/en/cruquius-museum--world-largest-steam-engine

Now that's a way to drain the inland sea! The cylinder diameter is 3.66 metres or 12.01 feet.. Huge. Lots of exhibits as to how the water pumped from the polders.

Very easy to get to.

@Nigel; as the name suggests Steam Engine De Cruquius is not “an honest-to-goodness functioning polder mill”. So it doesn’t appear to be what the son of the OP is looking for.
I do agree it’s an amazing sight. So is the even larger steam engine of the Woudagemaal in the province of Friesland. This particular steam engine is still used to keep our feet dry in case of high water levels, but it’s not what the son of the OP wants to see.

I didn't say it was a polder mill, I said it was related and a good experience

I am always careful with local claims, but as far as I know is the Woudagemaal the largest steam powered pump (installation) in the world and Cruquius has the largest steam engine in the world. Ofcourse different technique to keep our feet dry here in the Netherlands, but for those interested both very much worth visiting.

Thanks everyone.

@Dutch_traveler, thank you for your attention to detail. We will be there Aug 13-17 and not planning to rent a car, but we do have the budget for it (or possibly a private tour guide for a day) so I'm not ruling anything out. I emailed the volunteers at Molen van Sloten, and they kindly sent some cool photos of the removal of the vijzel and let me know it's possible it will be running again by mid-August so I will have to cross my fingers. It looks (from Google maps) like Dorregeestermolen is accessible by train & bus, which I'll check into further.

@Nigel, it's possible he'll also be interested in the steam engine so I'll show that to him. It could be a back-up option if his polder dream isn't realistic on this trip. Thanks.
