I am confused by the various travel pass options. We will be staying Haarlem for 4 nights, traveling back and forth to Amsterdam, using public transit in Amsterdam, and, of course, traveling to and from Schiphol airport on arrival and departure. I see Regional and city passes offered on GVB website, and Dutch Amsterdam website, and NS.NL. The prices seem to vary. Can someone help me understand this all better? Thank you so much.
GVB just covers Amsterdam city. There is an Amsterdam & Region 1,2,or 3 day pass available for 18.50, 26, or 33.50 EUR.

You might look at getting an OV Chipkaart or a Trip Key and pay as you go. Others will know better than I the ins and outs of these options.
LJL - Since you are arriving and departing from Schiphol you might consider using Tripkey. I haven't used it because I have an ov-chipkaart that I load funds onto but it works pretty much the same - check in when boarding and check out when leaving trains and trams. Easy peasy and convenient. You register your credit card with the company to get a registration # that you then present to pick up your card(s). If needed you can get multiple cards on the one cc account. You don't preload any funds, they just keep track of your travels and bill your credit card after you travel. How easy is that?
Here is their link so you can read about it. Tripkey
I'd like to also recommend Tripkey. I've used it, and it is so easy and convenient for foreigners. Pick it up at Schiphol at the Hertz desk and use it for all your transportation needs--buses, trains and trams. It's best to register in advance, so that it will be ready for you when you arrive. Happy travels.
