We just got back from Amsterdam where we stayed for a week. We wanted to buy a 7 day transit pass, but found we couldn't buy it at the airport- they only sold 1 or 2 day passes. We needed to buy a train ticket to the central train station and then bought the 7 day transit pass near there. My husband is a thrifty traveler and had hoped to take local transit from Shipol airport into the city. On our trip back to the airport, we did take bus 197 which is covered by Amsterdam transit tickets. The trip took about 45 minutes, but wasn't bad. Plus it showed us neighborhoods we never would of seen.
What you needed was the Amsterdam Travel Ticket which includes one round trip fro mmthe airport and unlimited local transport.
My husband is transit obsessed. After some planning, we ended up taking the local bus 69 from the airport, then tram 2 and then bus 18 right to our hotel. All this was included our Amsterdam day transit passes.
No point in being "transit obsessed" if you waste scarce travel time to save a couple Euro. That is just being a bad planner (like people who drive 30-min to find a gas station selling fuel 0.05 cheaper).
He's not that obsessed. He just likes figuring out the local transit systems. Because our hotel was so close to the bus, we actually spend the same amount if time as we would if we went to the central station for a train to Schipol.
