Amsterdam to London Gatwick - Flight or Train?

We need to travel from Amsterdam to London Gatwick area in August. Just wondering what is the best way - to fly or to take train?

We will be staying in Amsterdam city center area.

Please advise.

We need to travel from Amsterdam to London Gatwick area

Fly only if you need to be in the London Gatwick area as the train from Amsterdam does not stop near that area.
There are 8 nonstop flights to Gatwick daily.
If you buy your plane ticket today one way is as low as 24$ in August on either Easy Jet or British Airways.

Otherwise take the train but buy it well in advance to save

Eurostar will be running direct trains between Amsterdam Centraal and London St. Pancras in August, taking about four hours. Thameslink runs frequent trains from St. Pancras to Gatwick, taking about 45 minutes.

British Airways and Easyjet have several flights daily from AMS to LGW. Flight time is a little over an hour, plus the time it takes to get to AMS from wherever you're staying in Amsterdam. From Centraal Station, it's a frequent and quick train ride.

I didn't look at fares, but it seems like flying would make more sense if you want to end up at Gatwick instead of in London.

Rome2rio is a good way to find and compare options, but I'd suggest doing any online booking with the carriers' own websites (Eurostar or the airline).

  • If you actually want to get to Gatwick airport, then fly. EasyJet Amsterdam Schiphol to Gatwick.
  • If you want to get to central London, the train is a lot more civilised.
  • If it is somewhere "near" Gatwick, between London and the south coast, then the question is, is it easer to get to this place from central London (train), or from Gatwick (train or taxi if really close).
