We are traveling to Amsterdam the end of November/beginning of December and we are considering going to Essen Germany for a Christmas Market for the day. I am wondering if anyone has done this and is it doable in a day, or is there a closer Christmas Market that is just as good. Thanks for input
The trouble with Essen is that there is little to do there for tourists besides the market - which is reportedly great - and the Zollverein mining museum. Köln is a hair faster to reach, has a very good market, and more things to see and do besides the market.
Thank you, very helpful, that is the type of information I am looking for.
Düsseldorf and Koln have nice Christmas Markets and are 3 to 3,5 hours by train from Amsterdam.
Hi,
If you are looking for another worthy place in Essen aside from the Christmas Markt, I would suggest Villa Hügel, very interesting historically, most likely by local visitors there. I did a day trip once in Essen, spent that time in the Zentrum. Villa Hügel would have been much more enlightening.
