Amsterdam hotel or B&B

We’re planning a visit to The Netherlands mid August. We’ll be there for approx atelier 7 nights. Would you recommend staying in a hotel in Amsterdam or in a B&B? For the sake of not spending our entire budget on accommodation I’m leaning towards a B&B. Would anyone be able to recommend a hotel or B&B for us? We don’t have any mobility issues. We prefer to be away from nightlife so that we get a good sleep.

We stayed at Vergulden Eenhoorn. It is a small “hotel” with 6 or so rooms. It is connected to a restaurant that is popular but noise was not an issue at all; their sound proofing was very effective, and I am very sensitive to noises. Breakfast is available for an additional fee on a daily basis, for hotel guests only. I think it serves breakfast for anyone on weekends. It is an easy walk to Amstel Station where you can access the subway or tram, and also rent bikes. The hotel rooms “face” a canal and bike path, so no car traffic. We booked via booking.com. We found Dean to be very helpful and responsive. We also thought the price was very reasonable for the location.

We recently stayed 4 nights at Hotel Fita in the museum area. Not fancy, but quiet, clean and right near the Van Gogh and Rijk museums.

We stayed a week at the Hotel Nadia near the Anne Frank House last August.
COST for a week was $1000.

The room was small, but we had plenty of room for our stuff. The room faced a canal. Breakfast was good and free.
It is a small hotel with the room on the first floor (second floor in the USA).

Location was great, we could walk to all the sites. We were not far from the rail station and city center. Plenty of good restaurants in the area.

In researching where to stay, we found Amsterdam to be a bit expensive. We did this week after a safari in East Africa and came through Amsterdam (spent one night on our way to Africa). We stayed at the Hilton near the Airport (walking distance). That hotel was very nice, but cost was about $300 per night, are than double what we paid at Nadia. However, we were there only one night and wanted to be near the airport.

We wanted to be near city center and not have to take transport to do touring. A taxi from the airport was about $50.

I can recommend the XO Hotel Van Gogh. We stayed there in 2019, our adult daughter stayed there in 2022 and we will stay there again next month. Great central location; reasonable rates (for Amsterdam); small and simple clean rooms; and their website says rooms have A/C. The hotel is on a quiet pedestrian street just off the Museumplein, literally steps from the Van Gogh Museum. There are a number of very convenient tram stops nearby and a bus that goes direct from/to the airport (#397).

B&Bs are dying in Amsterdam thanks to the crackdown on Airbnb places. It's probably best to stay in a hotel.

To me, so-called "Airbnbs" are not B&Bs—or not in the traditional sense. Most are more like flop houses. I have stayed in real bed and breakfasts in Amsterdam and will stay in one again next week. You know, a place where the hosts actually live there, they serve you a breakfast, and give you local advice. Most of these things you do not get from the Airbnb company IMHO. The real things are alive and well.
