I have two nights (Sunday, Monday) and never visited before. Any suggestions on things to see and not miss. Also any suggestions for a hotel or accommodations not too far from port for those nights. Thanks for your help

I've been there several times; It is a great hang out in the streets walking checking things out kind of place, sometimes that is enough. The official tourism site of Holland has a lot of information on things to see that you may consider a not miss based on your own interests:

It takes 15 minutes to get to the port from further out in the canal rings. The port area is not as nice to wander. I hope you venture further out into the canal rings. What not to miss? Wandering the Nine Streets/Jordaan area. The Van Gogh museum. The Old Church in the Attic. Seeing the painting Night Watch at the Rijksmuseum (and other art as well) ...

You are going to be in Amsterdam this Sunday, 7/7?! Head for the nearest pub (not coffee house) or take a tram down to the Leidseplein and watch the Dutchies square off against the US for the Women's World Cup Championship. Wear something orange! Game starts at 5.
Sports not your thing. Go for a walk. (Avoid the Red Light District.) The 9 Streets. The area around the Rijksmuseum. The Vondelpark. The Jordaan. Buy a day pass and ride the trams. The 12 will get your down to Leidseplein, Museumplein and the Vondelpark.
Just a reminder. If you stay outside of Amsterdam and take a train into Central Station, be sure to keep your ticket. You will need it to get out through the gates.
