Amsterdam for 2 nights - neighborhood?

2-night-stay in mid-April - family of 4, 2 teenage boys - we don't mind walking, which is a good thing bc I'm not finding hotels we can afford in the center! :) We want to see the canals, probably take a canal boat ride, just wander the city, and otherwise i'm putting together our plans now. Would you stay in Museum Square or Vondelpark?

We used to stay south of the Vondelpark--just east of thestadium. There were many bed and breakfasts in the area, but they've disappeared. The owners found them less work sold as condos and apartments than working B&B's. You might check online or on Airbnb for properties in the suburbs. With a great tram system, we could get downtown in about 10 minutes.
You can go on Google Maps and enter the area of town you're interested in. It's easy to hit the "Hotel" check, and all the accommodations will pop up on the map. You can also magnify the map by using "Control and +" a couple of times and bed icons pop up. Click on the icons and you can often contract them directly. Often customer comments are listed too.

I never stay in the center. Its more, mm, grungy. Ive stayed east of Vondelpark in the De Pijp area, just north of Vondelpark in the Leidseplein area, west of Vondelpark. All offer easy access to the nine streets area and museums and the charming "outer rings" of canals. The center of town has a few attractions but I spend hardly any time there when I visit (fwiw, Im a middle aged mom with tw/eens)

You don’t give a budget, but we stayed at the Conscious Hotel Museum Square last year and were very pleased. The area was very quiet, but 2 blocks away is Museum Square, as well as an underground supermarket. The tram that takes you to Amsterdam Central also stops 2 blocks away. We would stay there again.

FYI all, we stayed st the Conscious Hotel museum square and it was great. Still very close and convenient to everything, and we avoided the noise / bustle. Great to be close to Vondelpark, too. Thanks!
