Amsterdam Customs

We are going on the Amsterdam after two weeks of BOE. Beings we are flying from London, so do we need to go through Customs at Shiphol Airport? Any pointers on the process for four adults with carryons only?

You will go through passport control and then customs at Schipol.
Just follow the crowd of other passengers getting off; there is an ABN Amro Bank ATM exiting baggage claim customs

Do you already have plane tickets?

We do have tickets. We leave our group in the morning and headout . its a cheap flight and quick. We get to AMS early enough to check in to our Hotel near the Van Gogh and Vondelpark and have time to wonder around and get dinner.. We'll already be adjusted to the time.
I have always wanted to do the Chunnel so maybe next time.

Don & Cyndi, When you say you are "flying from London", do you mean you have been staying in London (entered the UK) or just changing planes and not legally entering the UK?

  • If you have already entered the UK, you will not go through customs as both the UK and the Netherlands are in the EU.
    • That statement applies until Brexit, after that it is not yet decided what will happen.
    • Customs is the check on goods, and happens after luggage reclaim, as they are intetested in the contents of your bags.
    • But customs is a random stop only, 95%+ do not get stopped, so you may not even notice you have gone through customs.

What you really need to be asking about is immigration (aka passport control).

  • This will happen at Schiphol. as the UK is not in the Schengen Area, you will be entering the Schengen Area there.
  • Immigration occurs before luggage return.
  • Schiphol immigration is very efficient, and should take less than 30 minutes.
