Amsterdam Canal Cruise

Will be in Amsterdam on September 9. Going to Anne Frank Museum at 11 and would like to do a canal cruise after that. Wonder how long Anne Frank tour is AND anyone recommend an amazing canal cruise. Second, do we need to schedule canal cruise now or just wait until we get there. There are 11 of us!

We found the Anne Frank museum to be excellent and moving. The tour is pretty much go at your own pace. We enjoyed lingering and reading all of the placards, but even then I'm thinking it took us maybe an hour? There is a pleasant coffee shop / cafe at the end, so would be a good place for your group to re gather after the exhibit. As far as the canal boats, there are many boats and companies, and they go often - maybe every half hour? I don't know if they even take reservations; I wouldn't worry about it. We loved Amsterdam; enjoy your trip!

Recommend the Blue Boat line near Vondelpark and the museums.
Very enjoyable especially for a larger group.
Would recommend reservations because of the size of your party.
Have fun :-)

I used "Those Damn Boat Guys" in March and they operate small boats (although they said they were getting a larger boat). The boat I was on seated 12-15 passengers. It was a great trip and the Captain was a real character. Book early to make sure everyone in your party can go at the same time.

Thank you for the review on Those Damn Boat Guys . . . I am in the process of booking a private canal cruise for the 11 of us. Sounds like they might be a lot of fun! Hopefully it will work out since we have Anne Frank Museum tickets at 11:30 and canal cruise at 1:30 (looks like we board very close to Anne Frank Museum.

hey ltfergusson
what private canal cruise did you use? we also did a private cruise with rederij de jordaan. we had appetizers and booze and took a 2 to 3 hour cruise. it was fabulous, we split it between 4 people since it is pricey. did you find a place to stay, either with citymundo.com or houseboatrental.nl or houseboathotel.nl. things have changed a bit that amsterdam allows only 4 people per place to rent. don't forget they will charge you a "city tax" per day per person. we took a tram to albert cuypmarket, a pedestrian only market for blocks, food, cafes, crafts, clothing, souvenirs, produce, local food to taste. we had a good time. also look at tuktuk tours, amsterbike.eu. i took the tram to rembrandt plaza, i had knee and mobility issues, went alone. it was fun for me. lots of people watching, cafes, bars, restaurants, went to argentine steak house for empanada yummy, shops. we also did a private tour to windmills, zaanse shans , fishing villages, cheese factory, he also does other tours if you want to see something else, you can look him up dagtoetaxi.nl ahead of time. don't know how many so you may wanna divide group if some not interested. we also found a pedicab for 20 euros near dam square to take us around and even to red light district during daytime. it's very crowded in amsterdam with lots of bikes and tourists, be careful they don't run into you or vice versa. let me know if you've accomplished anything

Wow, thank you for all of your information!!! Sadly we are only in Amsterdam for a couple days. I am booking a canal cruise with Those Damn Boat Guys so that just us 11 will be on the boat. We have booked our one night stay through Airbnb. Couldn't find anything with the citymundo available. You did and saw sooo much! And yes, we have been informed about the bikes and to be aware they are everywhere. Now just hoping for good weather.

"And yes, we have been informed about the bikes and to be aware they are everywhere."

They are not kidding! I found Amsterdam to be the most dangerous city I have been to in Europe because of the bikes and motorcycles. After almost getting hit twice I learned to do a 270 degree scan before crossing any street and to keep looking at the sidewalk to see where the bike path was!

How much do you tip the captain if a private 90 minute tour???? Do you tip in Amsterdam like you would here in the states?

Glad you booked with Those Dam Boat Guys. I think you will have a lot of fun. When I saw that the limit was ten people, I wondered what you would do. They address tipping on the website but I don't know how much it would be for a private tour. Tipping is not expected in Europe so not sure how to advise. We did not tip for our regular cruise.

Tipping in the Netherlands is different from here.
You can certainly tip the captain if you wish but it is not expected.
