Amsterdam and beyond 6 days...in Sept

We are ending a Viking river cruise in Amsterdam, the day before we disembark we will spend a day in the Kinderdijk area.

I am looking for some wonderful travel advice from all the experienced world travelers out there
We will have 6 days after departing our cruise. I looked at staying in Amsterdam the entire time, but would rather stay in a small town for the last few days and don't want to spend hours on the train every day trying to get back there

We will be leaving early on the 6th day. I was thinking about staying in Amsterdam in the central/canal area for 2 full days Wed, Thur and leaving Friday to go to??? Plan on visiting Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum, Ann Frank House and ...Do you think that's enough time in Amsterdam for this?
I then wanted to find a location out of the city to stay the next 3 days where we could do day trips to Delft, Haarlem, Leiden, Ghent, The Hague ,Giethoorn Rotterdam
If you had only these few days, where would you base your stay so we wouldn't have to move hotels every night. I realize that we could only do about 3, possibly 4 in a short amount of time. I think Delft, The Hague, Haarlem and Leiden are fairly close together. I have heard wonderful things about Ghent and Bruges but think it's too far for this trip.

Thank you for all your help...

The trains from Amsterdam Centraal aren’t long enough to move warrant moving locations, in my opinion. We try to limit moving too much also. Our last visit there we trained to Delft and Haarlem no problem. We took the localbus.nl from the train station to Volendam, Edam (wednesday is their cheese market day), and Markem. It is €12.50 for the transportation. They have other itineraries. Besides, there is so much to see and do in Amsterdam your 6 days will be filled. Our last trip we stayed 9 nights.

This trip will be our third time in the Netherlands. In May, we are staying in Rotterdam (our cruise leaves and ends there), which is also a short train ride from Amsterdam Centraal. If you go to Rome2rio.com and plug in each city, it will let you know how long of a train ride it will be.

We did go to Brugges for the day, with a private driver, it was too long a ride and not enough time in the city. Hopefully we will get back that way again to see Brugges properly. Not this trip though.

Much good information here. Thanks. However, this is my first sola trip to Amsterdam and I want to rest couple of days before I set out on my 7 week trip of U.K. and France.

Looking for recommendations for where to stay in the city where it is quiet? AMS is huge and busy, I understand. Reasonably close in to the airport? Small family accomodation or quiet hostal is my preference , where available.

Arriving in AMS April 11 2024 from Ecuador where I live--- a lengthy overnight trip. I will be exhausted and need two days of downtime before setting out for the U.K. for two and one half weeks. I am a mature adult frugal traveler. I will need reasonable cost accomodation. NOTE: I normally stay with friends while traveling in Europe. I have 7 weeks in Plum Village in Bordeaux and other parts of France, U.K. Help from anyone with lots of experience in AMS?

Thanks very much.

@sueb4bs; welcome to the forum. Since this is your first post here, you’re probably not aware that it isn’t proper forum etiquette to post your own unrelated question in a thread started by someone else. Please start a new thread. You can do so by going to the subforum for the Netherlands and then clicking on the blue “start a new topic” button.

@Monica; the Netherlands isn’t a big country and the cities you want to visit are in a relatively small area. I’m not counting Bruges and Ghent because a day trip to these two cities is not realistic.
If you go to the website of the Dutch national railway company https://www.ns.nl/en you can check train schedules and prices. If you would stay in Amsterdam, your furthest train trip would be to Delft. That train ride can be done in an hour.
If you’re really set on staying somewhere else, I would recommend Leiden. Leiden is a great city with canals, interesting museums etc. It’s also very conveniently located for the airport. A 16 minute direct train ride will get you to Schiphol Airport.

Edited to add the website of the Dutch national railway company. Use this official source instead of a 3rd company ticket reseller.

Thank you all your wonderful advice.Leiden sounds like a good idea, all we need now is a place to stay . We would love it to be centrally located, not too far from the main train station, smaller with character in the med price range $200 per night???

Thank you for your help

Hotel prices are very much date dependent. A hotel can cost €200 in low season but double that in peak season.
I suggest you to go to a hotel booking website like booking.com and plug in your exact dates to see what’s available.
