We will be in Amsterdam for four days before our cruise....
What is the best unique small towns to experience close to Amsterdam and is it best
to take an excursion or do it on our own. We like only small groups of 8 people if we
are doing an excursion and usually 4-6 hours.

I don't know it it's "unique" but Haarlem is an easy daytrip to do on your own.
There are tours for about 6 hours that visit windmills and some quaint small towns on the Zuider Zee. They put you on a ferry transporting you from one village port to another.
I would suggest Edam. I stayed a couple of days there and loved it. You could do it as a day trip.
