AMS Schiphol Recent Airport Experience

We just returned from a great trip to Netherlands and Spain, with AMS serving as our gateway airport. I just wanted to share our experience as arriving and departing AMS changed a bit since we last used the airport. As most know, the Entry/Exit System (EES) is up and running. At arrival, as you approach passport control, a clearly marked queue appears so you can provide electronic fingerprints and other biometric data. For us, there were no lines and that took no more than 3 minutes. At conclusion, you are given a “Route”, which is essentially your assigned line as you walk into Passport Control. I was given Route 1 while my wife earned Route 2. My Route 1 line had just a half dozen people in front of me while my rule following wife went to the back of the much longer Route 2 line. Still, both lines in passport control were shorter than I have previously experienced but it took nearly 20 minutes to get through my very short line while my wife’s line took nearly an hour, even though her line was relatively short compared to prior years of traveling through AMS. So, it would appear that they may still be working through some issues with the EES per our experience and my brief discussion with one of the border control staff.

Departing AMS changed a bit as well from past experience-for the better. (We usually fly Delta/KLM direct to MPLS). In the past, after going through passport control, we have always had to have another supplemental security screen with Delta/KLM employees to enter into your assigned gate. However, there was no supplemental security screening for our gate so we were free to get some steps in before our 8 hour flight. Not sure when that process changed at AMS but I figured I would mention it. Have a nice day!

Thank you Jay for this update. We are flying into AMS in a few months and were wondering how the new system was working. Truly appreciate the information.

This is great information to have, thanks for sharing! I am flying to Europe with AMS as my arrival and departure airport as well, but in early September. Hoping the kinks with system will be fixed by then.
But I am surprised they split your travel party (you and wife) into 2 routes. Is it because each of you used a different machine versus doing all the biometrics together into a single transaction (if possible)?
I am asking because I will be traveling with my family later in the year (different airport, and it would be kid first time in Europe under new system). If split, husband in different line, I would probably just break the route suggestion and keep us together...

But since husband and I will already be registered with EES later in the year, do we still need to use the machines? Is that done at every entry?

@Jay MN

Might help if you add whether the passport control you went through was as a transfer to another flight, or to exit the airport. The two are different areas, and often different experiences.

We were surprised too, JoyNYC. From our experience, we didn’t have the option to enter our biometrics in one transaction. Or, if you could do that, it wasn’t readily apparent to us.

Paul: Our experience as noted in my original post was based on our arrival to Amsterdam as our final destination, i.e Exit. Sorry, I wasn’t clear. (we went back to AMS the next day to fly to Seville with a separate ticket/airline).

Thanks for update. I will be flying into Amsterdam from Edinburgh end of April and was wondering about the process. Question- I already went thru this new process in Belgium on December, so I shouldn’t have to sign up for it again. Did you notice if there is a separate line for people who already registered. Or do we go to the same machines and just enter our fingerprints etc? FYI I am from US

Also I am traveling with someone from Australia who will need to sign up and is visually impaired and will have trouble seeing the machines. I was hoping that we wouldn’t be split up.

Any insight appreciated

I am not an expert on this so hopefully someone more knowledgeable chimes in, but from my understanding, since you already entered your biometrics in December, you should just bypass the queue for biometrics and head straight to passport control and you should be set. Once in passport control, I did not notice a separate line for people who already registered their biometrics. For the life of me, I cannot explain the “routes” numbers they gave nor why passport control took so long on our arrival day. I anticipate the process may change some when you arrive there. I just wanted to post my experience last week as I haven’t seen recent posts here and it was something I was curious about.

Jay- thanks for the update. I am glad you did post your recent experience since I haven't seen much info about it. When we arrived in Brussells on Dec. 1 - I was prepared that we might have to do the biometrics. We were in line forwever - about 1 1/2 hrs since they were still installing the biometrics machines and they weren't operational. The passport people were having trouble with the computers and they did the gathering of the biometrics. The lines were so long at passport control that airport staff was passing out bottles of water and snacks to people in line. We were lucky that we finally got pulled out of line since we had a person traveling with us who had a cane and was having trouble standing for so long.

I was reading on a different page about this runaway at AMS that is very FAR AWAY from the terminal. And how some flights after landing take forever to reach terminal.
My experience is that arrival flight time on a ticket usually means the time at the gate. I wonder if that is the case with flights at AMS.
I've been to Amsterdam before but arrived and departed by train - this will be my first connection at AMS.

Just trying to think how much time I will actually have as connection if we land far and if I am doing EES, etc. Per my ticket, I have 2h20m connection. Leave USA on Delta, arrive AMS (2h20m connection), depart on KLM Cityhopper to Krakow. I believe my flight arrives on G gate and leaves from B or C at AMS.

I traveled through AMS in route to Zurich in March of 2024. They were requiring travelers to do preliminary EES fingerprinting at that time. So I’m wondering since I’m returning in a few days if I will need to go through the lines again? The lines were unbelievably long and I missed my connecting flight, which cost a delay of 3 hours!
