American Express for tap on tap off?

Hello! Arriving in Amsterdam Sunday to spend 10 days traveling around the Netherlands. Is American Express accepted as payment on trains, trams, etc to tap on tap off? I hope someone knows the answer! Thank you!!

I recall seeing in one of the recent posts that AMEX cards are not accepted, but perhaps someone with first-hand experience can confirm.

I think you would check with American Express to see where their card is accepted.

I haven't had much luck using my AMEX overseas except at hotels or in larger stores. (It's got the contactless feature but seems to not be as widely accepted.) I have a Capital One Mastercard exclusively for travel that I use instead when the AMEX isn't an option.
I agree to check with them directly, but that's been my experience. Happy travels!

The system that allows you to tap your debit and credit card to pay for public transport nationwide in the Netherlands is called OVPay.
On the OVPay website you’ll see that only Visa and Mastercard are accepted. https://www.ovpay.nl/en

In genera,l Americans Express isn’t accepted by a lot of merchants in the Netherlands and in Europe. So if that’s your only credit card, you’ll definitely run into many more situations where your Amex won’t be accepted.

Hi. I’ve been in the Netherlands this week and when I tried to use my AMEX with the busses it did not work. I have it currently set as my Express Transit card and have used it in London with no issues. When I went to use it on a bus in a city outside of Amsterdam it would not work and the bus driver told me they did not take AMEX. After that experience, I did not even try to use in Amsterdam.
