Advice please on a day trip from Amsterdam.

Hi all,

We are staying in Amsterdam for a few days in October and was looking for a day trip out of the city. Can you visit Delft, The Hague and Arnhem in the one day? If so, is it easy to do it by train? and which train?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Russell.

Delft and den Haag are easy together. Linked by a tram line they are adjacent and a good match.

You could also see a bit of Rotterdam, also adjacent, and maybe Kinderdijk if you are interested in beautiful and in situ windmills.

Arnhem is a good trip on its own; too far to add to the others in only one day, IMHO.

The easiest way for visiting The Hague (Den Haag) and Delft is to buy a return ticket to Delft. Get out at Den Haag Centraal, and after done your things in The Hague, continue to Delft.
Trains leave Amsterdam Centraal every 15 mins, some requiring a change at Leiden Centraal. Check at www.ns.nl/reisplanner-v2/index.shtml?language=en

Both Arnhem and its neighboring city Nijmegen are easily doable as day trips. There are many trains daily from Amsterdam Centraal taking between 75 and 90 minutes each way. I heartily recommend going to these eastern Dutch cities to get a significantly different perspective on the Netherlands. While these cities are off the typical tourist's itinerary, they do have some excellent sites to visit - both history and art museums, a National park, a couple of very famous bridges, etc ...- while showing how "typical Dutch" people live and work.

Arnhem and Nijmegen have both suffered a lot from WWII. If you want to have a day trip in a different region, go to Zwolle and Kampen. Both old Hansa cities and a different atmosphere from Holland (the western part of the country). Kampen is some 10 mins by half-hourly train from Zwolle (1 hr from Amsterdam on Intercity train), so they're easily combined.
