7 hour layover at Schiphol Airport ... enough time for a trip into Amsterdam?

We have a 7 hour layover at Schiphol airport (from arrival to departure time). Is it worth storing our luggage and doing a quick trip into Amsterdam? Has anyone done this? We would probably be looking to have a quick bite and walk around to fight jet lag (from our overnight flight from the west coast).

Thanks!

Ya, you would have three hour or so. It depends on you final flight. If it within the Schengen zone then you will go through immigration in Amsterdam so your return would only have to go through airport security.

Where are you headed from Amsterdam and are you arriving from the US? Asking to see whether you will have to go thru Immigration anyway or if you would stay in the International side of the airport. It also determines whether you'd need to go thru Immigration for your outbound flight if you do go in to Amsterdam.

Hi Kristina, we recently had a long 10-hour layover at Schiphol when our initial flight in the US was delayed, causing all of our flights to be rebooked. We left our luggage at a monitored storage spot at the airport and took a train over to Leiden. You should have time to enjoy walking around Amsterdam instead of just inside the airport.

Thank you for the quick replies. We are flying from US and onto Copenhagen. So, sounds like we would clear immigration in the Netherlands (regardless) and just need to go thru security again on the return entry to Schiphol.

Jean, that's encouraging to hear -- and our thoughts as well about trying to make the most of the time.

We usually do carry on only, so I was thinking of checking our bags at the storage locker. But, I'm also considering just checking all the way thru to Copenhagen from US. In which case, our bags would just remain under control of the airport during our layover. Has anyone does this? Or, if we exit the airport / clear immigration for a short day trip do we have to have our bags with us?

Also appreciate guidance on how much time to allow to get through security / arrive back at the airport in advance of our flight to Copenhagen.

Thanks!
