Hi -
My wife and I are traveling to Amsterdam to see our daughter, while she is in school. We are looking to stay in Amsterdam for a week and day tripping from Amsterdam. We need ideas and recommendations for places to see and things not to miss. Any suggestions would be wonderful. We are traveling in June. We are also looking for hotel recommendations. W Amsterdam and the Hilton Amsterdam look very well located. What areas do you suggest for hotels?
Amsterdam will keep you busy for the entire week. A don’t miss for us was a hidden Catholic Church in a home. It’s called Our Lord in the Attic or Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder. It was interesting, larger than the small outside suggests, and historic.
We enjoyed our day trip to Haarlem. The Corrie Ten Boom museum is there but you must pre-book. It’s a lovely city and an easy ride from Amsterdam Centraal.
On our first trip to Amsterdam we used it as a base to explore other towns in The Netherlands. We used the excellent Dutch train system. We visited Haarlem, The Hague and Delft, Leiden and Kinderdijk just outside of Rotterdam. On our second trip there , we used Leiden as a base which worked very well too. Of course, you’ll always want to save at least one day for Amsterdam.
Definitely the Anne Frank house. Be sure and check the website to know exactly when tickets go on sale for the dates you will be there. (It's usually 6 weeks out on a Tuesday's at 10am (Amsterdam time). They sell out quickly.
Also the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum.
Must Do:
Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh, Anne Frank, Vondelpark, wander Amsterdam, wander Jordaan
Food:
Winkel 43 (apple pie), Patisserie Holtkamp (apple pie near Rijksmuseum), Luna’s (Argentinian steakhouse)
I have spoken.
Do a 1 day and night, trip to Prague, by plane, you wont be disappointed
