WE are planning on 3 nights in Amsterdam approximately April 24 - 27. The purpose of the trip is a stopover en route to Portugal. We are mainly interested in bicycling through tulip fields, canal ride, and enjoying food, music in Amsterdam.
Our thought is to stay in Amsterdam and take bus or ? to the tulip area and Gardens .. We will rent bikes there for 1/2 day and return to Amsterdam. If you have any suggestions as to where to stay in Amsterdam, please advise. We are interested in a medium priced b and b in an area where we can walk to restaurants, cafes, canals - not in a real touristy area - perhaps a neighbourhood . Also tips on how to achieve the tulip excursion would be helpful. We do not need a guided tour - just a way to get there and where to rent the bikes and a map for biking in the tulip area.
Thank you so much!
The area around the Jordaan or Nonce streets or Leidseplein are nice. I cant help with the tulips but I bet a search above for that would give you a lot ("transportation amsterdam to ...", as would Rome2Rio). I recommend renting bikes in Amsterdam too, if you are game. There are many locations to do so, from MacBike or Blackbike, among others. Its hard to be anywhere in Amsterdam and not be near cafes and canals, but the three I mention are a cute central-to-siteseeing, but outside the city center. In the city center, I recommend "the old church in the attic". Not somewhere most people visit but it was a favorite (as was the van gogh museum. Foodhallen is a fun dinner - if you rent bikes you could ride there. Also, riding bikes around Vondelpark)
RE: Keukenhof Gardens on your own
Take the train from Amsterdam Centraal station to the airport
At the airport, follow the signs from Schiphol Plaza to the bus stop and take the Keukenhof bus 858 , near Arrival Hall 4 (next to the Starbucks)
Buy a combo ticket of transportation and skip the line ticket for around €29 each from the driver
The combo ticket includes entrance tix and bus transportation to/from Schiphol-Keukenhof.
I believe bicycles can be rented at Keukenhof
