We are returning to the Netherlands after 25 years and we are staying in Amsterdam for the first time. We plan on using public transportation and are looking for recommendations on where to stay that are centrally located and reasonably priced. Are there recommendations any of you can make? Thanks in advance.
Raf,
welcome.
*whats "reasonably priced" or better yet a price range?
*are you all mobile?
*can you climb stairs day in day out?
happy trails.
Yes, we can easily climb stairs and are very mobile....with regard to reasonably price no more than $250 per night.
Hotel Alexander - near public transportation, short walk to Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh museum, Leidseplien square and Vondelpark.
The Times Hotel. Right on Herengracht canal (many rooms overlook the canal). Very close to multiple tram lines, 5 minute taxi ride or 10 minute walk to Amsterdam Centraal (or catch a tram from Centraal to be dropped off just a few blocks away), bordering the Jordaan neighborhood, lots of restaurants, shops, etc. Has a small, but reliable elevator in the hotel to make getting luggage up or down from your room very easy.
I like the Quentin Arrive Hotel in the Jordaan nighborhood. The hotel is a five-minute walk from the train station where you can catch trams to all parts of the city. Jordaan is a very nice, quiet neighborhood as well. Amsterdam is pretty walkable in general - it's a compact city and exploring canals and quiet side streets is part of the experience. The curve of the canals and other streets can be a bit disorienting (you think you're walking in a straight line but you aren't) so get a good map.
