I will be flying from Atlanta to Leeds, UK in September. I have a 20 hr layover in Amsterdam: 1:10 pm to 9:00 am the next am. Is it possible to leave airport and go into the city for the eve and get hotel for the night? Worried about customs and security issues.
Definitely! Or you could stay near the airport, but head into the city for the afternoon and evening. If you did that it would save you a bit of time in the morning since it is an early flight.
I would stay near the airport so you can get to your flight easier in the morning. The train station is directly under the airport, so easy to get to/from city center. I've stayed at Citizen M hotel a couple times and it is very convenient. AMS can be very busy and security can take a good long while depending on the day. About two weeks ahead of your flights you can check the busy-ness of the airport for your specific flights on your designated days - https://www.schiphol.nl/en/my-travel-day/today
I agree. Stay at an airport hotel, and go enjoy city center; returning back to your hotel in the evening for your morning departure.
