We are in the Cologne/dusseldorf area and are without lodging for two days. I was thinking we could go into the Netherlands as we have have only been to Amsterdam. Does anybody have suggestions on locations? We are coming back to this region after the two days.

Can recommend VRBO/HomeAway for a variety of accommodations.
We rented a house outside of Amsterdam in Zandaam for three days and were very pleased.
Prices are reasonable and competitive with standard hotel rooms.
Despite all the wet kisses for nightly rentals, there are negative impacts. See extended threads on the Travel Forum.
The area around those river towns like Zwolle and Zutphen is nice, as are those towns themselves together with Kampen, Deventer and Doesburg. Variety of meadows and woods, a good collection of castles and country houses, and close to Köln/Düsseldorf.
ICE high speed train runs from Cologne to Utrecht. Utrecht is a great town for two nights. There are a number of great restaurants right next to the old canal, about 5 museums, climb the Dom, shopping at Hoog Catherine. There is a market in the square right outside the mall heading to the old canal that has stroopwaffels and poffertjes. In the renovated train station there is an information center staffed with city helpers. Also canal boats rides too.
Very nice town.
