14 hour layover, suggestions?

The departure time I want from Glasgow has a 14 hour layover in Amsterdam. Leaving Glasgow at 5 pm. Is there anything worthwhile to do that time of day, going in to the night that I should leave the airport to do? Is transport to and from airport easy enough? Are there lockers to leave my carryon?

Transport into Amsterdam is very easy with trains to Amsterdam Centraal station every few minutes for the 15 minute ride.
What time do you arrive and what time do you depart?

Evening canal cruise would be fun. There are several hotels at the Airport that you can walk to. We have a a 17 hour layover in Amsterdam landing at 4pm. Plan to check into the Citizen M then take train to city center for dinner and an evening cancel cruise.

Yes there are storage lockers. https://www.schiphol.nl/en/at-schiphol/services/luggage-storage/

What time does your onward flight depart? If it were me I would get an airport hotel (search the forum, plenty of options), drop bags, take train in for a very late dinner and quick look, and return to get a good night sleep. Note getting through passport control can take awhile on arrival so factor that in. And of course make sure you allow yourself a good amount of time to clear security and get to your onward gate for departure (if it's to the USA there are extra thorough checks at the gate). You can see how busy the airport is scheduled to be on your day of travel about two weeks ahead https://www.schiphol.nl/en/my-travel-day/today

Thanks guys. I get in at 7:25 pm and leave 10:20 the next morning, returning to US. The hotel is a good idea.

Three days before, you can make an appt for security for leaving the country. We had an appt, but the lines were so short we didn't need it.
Have a great trip!

Buy a different ticket. That's a terrible arrangement.

An evening in Amsterdam. Not exactly terrible.

I have stayed at Citizen M twice and though it is expensive (so are all the airport hotels) it couldn't be more convenient - 7 minute walk to the main terminal - and the iPad controlled room is nifty. If you sign up to be a "free" member on their website I think you get a slight discount.

Hi Leslie,

I just did the same yesterday. I arrived at Amsterdam around 8:30pm from Malaga and was flying out the next morning at 10:30am. I stayed at the Sheraton at the airport. You don’t have to go outside. Just head towards the taxi arrow inside the airport, and you will see a sign for the walkway over the lanes to go directly into the Sheraton.

My room was very nice, although it hurts to pay almost $300 for a room when my nice ones in Spain were 1/2 to 1/3 that price. : )
